Itararé

Itararé is a city located on southwest region of São Paulo state, Close to the border of the Paraná state. With an estimated population of around 50k people, it is known for its exuberant nature and beautiful landscapes.

LOCATION

Itararé is the second most populated municipality in Itapeva’s region, and it has 50.8k inhabitants. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Itararé is roughly US$ 218 million (R$ 1,1 bilhão de reais) and 50.3% of it has as its source the services area, followed by farming (20.2%), government spending (19.8%) and industry (9.7%).

CLIMATE

Itararé’s climate is subtropical with temperatures reaching 33º C (91.4º F) in summer and falling to -2º C (28.4º F) during the winter. The rainfall is distributed throughout the year decreasing during the winter months.

In Itararé the summer is long, warm, humid, and mostly clouded, whereas the winter is short, mild, and partially clouded. Throughout the year, the temperature ranges from 10º C (50º F) to 29º C (84.2º F) and rarely falls below 5º C (41º F) or above 33º C (91.4º F).

Itararé has three learning centers, from private initiatives, that offer professional courses, and two colleges, also from the private sector.

Considering all learning and professional training centers, there are over 14 fields of specialization and professional development.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

In 2022, Itararé municipality experienced more hiring than dismissals, with a positive balance of 20 employees, some labor fields with hiring highlights are freight transport (111), wood products manufacturing (66), supermarket and variety stores (32).

Besides that, in 2022 there was an increase of 46 new companies in Itararé municipality.

AGRIBUSINESS

Itararé has a strong presence in agriculture and cattle raising. The City offers the opportunity to introduce new technology and equipment to improve efficiency and increase agricultural production.

JOB CREATION

Up until February, 2023, a net job creation of 20 new employees was recorded. Itararé stands out for its positive performance in job creation, ranking 4th in Itapeva’s region, and it is remarkably the 5th fastest growing municipality.

The positive highlights include freight transportation (111), wood product manufacturing (66), variety stores and supermarkets (32).

EDUCATION

Itararé has 26 daycares and elementary schools, that serve children from 0 to 14 years old, and the average ranges from 60 to 140 students per daycare center. The average for elementary schools is from 135 to 512 students per school.

As for the high school level, there are eight managed by the State of São Paulo and three by the private sector. Besides that, Itararé maintains a Multiprofessional Care Center that is specialized in supporting specific groups, such as autistic people.

LANGUAGE LEARNING

Bilingual education is included in our municipal schools, with weekly English classes, with one class a week for students from 1st to 5th grade, and two classes a week to students from 6th to 9th grade.

SCHOOL BUS SERVICE

Itararé provides school bus service to students of the municipal school network in the urban and rural areas. In 2023, there are 983 transported students, 227 from rural areas, and 756 from urban areas.

PROFESSIONAL COURSES

The municipality has partnerships with Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE), the Social Service of Industry (SESI), and the National Rural Learning Service (SENAR).

SCHOOL SAFETY

Through a partnership with Municipal Civil Guard (GCM), schools are guarded and have periodic patrols to intensify the security in the school environment. The patrols take place, mostly, during students’ entry and exit times promoting a broad sense of security to students, parents, and educational personnel.
In addition to patrols, schools receive educational lectures, such as traffic safety and the fight against to drug use and trafficking.

PUBLIC SAFETY

In 2018, amongst 138 cities that have a population above 50 thousand, Itararé was ranked as the 86th most safe in the São Paulo State. The data were published by the São Paulo State Ranking of Exposure to Violent Crimes, developed by the “Sou da Paz” institute in partnership with “Estadão” newspaper.

In Brazil, there is a public security body called Municipal Civil Guard (GCM), its main mission is to safeguard public property and protect
citizens’ rights.

The Municipal Civil Guard has also the responsibility to carry out actions of urban security, prioritizing those of a preventive nature and qualified repression, focusing on the maintenance of public order, nonviolent conflict resolution, and crisis management.

Itararé has the most well-structured Municipal Civil Guard in the southwest region of São Paulo State.

Additionally, the municipality has a Civil Defense body, which is responsible for identifying and mapping disaster risks, preparing for and responding to any kind of disaster, and aiding people affected by disasters, thereby reducing materials losses, and reestablishing the social welfare.

HEALTH

There are eight health posts in the urban area with fifteen doctors. In the rural area, there are six health posts with two doctors. In total, seventeen doctors compose the Unified Health Service System (SUS) in the municipality.

COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH UNITS

In addition to health centers, the municipality manages the FARMAI which provides medication for free. High-cost and long-term medication are included in the list of drugs provided by FARMAI.

To provide a specific service for people afflicted with mental health disorders, Itararé has a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) unit that takes care of patients and their relatives.

Other specialized services managed by the municipal government of Itararé include a dental clinic and a physiotherapy department. 

HOSPITAL

The municipality has a hospital with 86 beds and 37 doctors.
